San Francisco: Fantastic Scoops with Perfect Texture at Mr and Mrs. Miscellaneous
Tuesday, December 18, 2012

This shop is hands-down the best ice cream Parlor SCOOP Blog has reviewed in the entire Bay Area. That's right, we said it: it's better than Bi-Rite and Humphry Slocombe! It is also one of the best ice cream shops we've rated in the United States.

Co-Proprietor Ian Flores learned his craft while working in the kitchen of several top restaurants throughout the country, discreetly picking up the secrets of the top ice cream masters. He has undoubtedly taken their craft to the next level. What I encountered at Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous boggled my mind. Flores and his fiance, Annabelle Topacio, have mastered the art of ice cream. What you can find here is perfectly balanced, intense, layered flavors. Each flavor is developed with the precision of a surgeon, which is especially impressive considering that this shop rotates its flavors on a daily basis, keeping the selection at around 10 flavors a day. These flavors tend to be twists on classics, with a small number of experimental flavors thrown into the mix each day. Perhaps what is most impressive about the ice cream and Mr. and Mrs. is the texture and density. Their ice cream is wonderfully dense (dare we say the densest we've reviewed to date?). That density is paired with one of the smoothest textures you will ever find. No ice crystals to speak of. In a word: bliss! All the flavors are organic, too, which means that you can indulge in a scoop and expand your ecological consciousness at the same time.

The "Mr." hard at work, serving smiling customers

In addition to organic ice cream, Mr. and Mrs. also offer a great selection of other treats: homemade peanut Brittle (yum!), naturally flavored fruit licorice, and an assortment of cookies. I always like to pick up a few sticks of the sour cherry licorice for the walk back. The shop also happens to be across the street from Serpentine, one of San Francisco's premier brunch spots. If you find yourself at Serpentine, skip the dessert there and pick up a scoop right across the street!

Flavor Tasting Notes

SCOOP Blog Found Impressively Dense, Smooth and Tasty Flavors at Mr. and Mrs.

Balanced, sweet, intense cardamom flavor.

Very natural, balanced pumpkin flavor. Almost tastes like perfectly textured Pumpkin puree.

Sweet Cream

Wonderfully dense, beautifully rich cream flavor. Extremely flavorful and balanced. Really fresh.

Salted Mango

Wonderfully pure mango flavor. Am I eating a perfectly ripe, fresh mango, here? Extremely dense and creamy. Tastes like ideal mango lassi. Salt is extremely subtle and balanced, but adds to the flavor.

Banana Toffee

True banana flavor. Tastes like sweet, mashed bananas. Toffee ribbon is good, and pairs well with banana; slightly crunchy. Not too heavy or overpowering, like some banana ice creams can be.

Intense nutmeg flavor. A bit over-sweet.

Strawberry Shortcake

Menu says tastes like Good Humor. Accurate. This is what Good humor wishes it could be when it grows up.

Chai Tea

Spicy cardamom or clove (?) note. Very balanced, strong flavor. Chai-like, but hard to identify a tea flavor.

Honey Graham.

Pronounced, real honey flavor. Tastes like just poured out of honey bear. Grahams are not frozen - almost tastes like swirled in right before serving. Chunks of graham relatively small but add good flavor to the mix. Good texture on graham.

Final Score: 9/10
